Paiute Plant of the Month – Rabbitbrush
September 22, 2023
Rabbitbrush is " Skoomp" in Paiute. The scientific name is Ericameria nauseosa. Click here to learn how to say it!
Rabbitbrush is a multi-branched deciduous shrub that boasts many bright golden-yellow flowers in the late summer to mid-fall. Pine nut picking season is traditionally identified by the appearance of the bright yellow flowers on the plant.
Rabbit brush was used as traditional chewing gum, as well as used for making dolls referred to as Skoomp'um dolls (typically made by the Shivwits Band of Paiutes). Rabbitbrush can also be used to smudge the home in very special cases.
As always please remember to have an experienced traditional plant knowledge holder with you when looking to collect plants.

Orange Shirt Day
September 22, 2023
Orange Shirt Day is observed in September on the 30th. In honor of Orange Shirt Day, we will be walking from the PITU Pow Wow grounds through the Cedar City Village on Friday, September 29th. Everyone is encouraged to join the walk and wear an orange shirt!
Orange Shirt is a day observed by Native American communities across North America to reflect and remember those we have lost to the Indian Boarding School system, as well as those who are still affected by the atrocities that the boarding school system imposed upon their lives. Join us next Friday!
