Each month, our cultural resources director, Autumn Gillard, shares a Paiute word of the month. The word for November is especially noteworthy as we go into Native American Heritage Month.
The true name for the Southern Paiute people is “Nung’Wu,” (to hear a pronunciation, click here).
Other variations include “Nuwu” and “Nuwuvi.” However, the word “Paiute” was first imposed on the Nung’Wu ancestors during the Dominguez-Escalante expedition in 1776.
In honor of Native American Heritage Month, the PITU Cultural Department will be posting a series of trivia questions on social media for a chance to win prizes each week. Watch for the first question on Monday.
