HEALTHY HABITS
As we look to the new year, the Youth Program invites our youth and their families to focus on healthy habits – small, everyday actions that strengthen the mind, body, and spirit. In many tribal teachings, we learn that wellness is a circle, and every step we take, no matter how small, adds to our balance.
Rather than looking far ahead to big goals that can feel distant, our youth will be learning how to build systems – simple routines that support short-term achievements. These habits help our youth feel connected, capable, and grounded in who they are.
Healthy habits can look like the following:
- Choosing nourishing foods, including traditional foods that connect us to our ancestors and the land.
- Moving our bodies through walking, dancing, running, or playing – honoring the teachings that our bodies carry our stories.
- Listening to traditional songs or learning instruments such as the Native American flute or drums to calm the spirit and strengthen cultural identity.
- Practicing a moment of gratitude each day to stay mindful of our blessings and responsibilities.
Here are a few tips for families to support these habits at home:
- Start small, one habit at a time.
- Keep it fun: turn movement or cooking into family time.
- Celebrate progress, not perfection.
- Encourage youth to notice how these habits make their bodies and spirits feel.
Together, let’s help our youth begin the year in a good way, one healthy habit at a time.
