GRATITUDE AND GIFTING
With the upcoming months approaching, Youth activities will focus on the themes of gratitude and gifting, values that have always been part of Native culture. In our social gatherings, ceremonies, and other activities, we try to remember to give thanks, share with others, and strengthen our connections as family and community.
In November, our activity will be learning pre-recorded circle dance songs led by Youth Advocate Elissa Aguayo, a member of the Shivwits Band. We’ll explore not only the songs themselves but hopefully get their translation and meaning, helping youth to connect to the language and traditions carried through circle dance.
Youth who wish to participate are encouraged to bring the hand drums made in a previous activity (we’ll also have some available at the activity). Everyone will have the chance to join in and learn.
Key points to remember:
- Songs can be composed and gifted to others, serving as a meaningful act of generosity.
- Singing and sharing songs are themselves gifts, when sung for the community, especially when called upon.
- Pay attention to the language used in the songs; understanding the words helps carry forward their meaning and intentions.
