This month, the Youth Program is teaming up with Patient Outreach to present a special youth activity focused on nutrition and movement. We’ll talk about how what we eat gives us the energy to stay active, and we’ll get moving with a fun activity to bring the discussion to life.

While our activity won’t focus directly on traditional foods, the Tribe has a booklet highlighting traditional foods. These foods carry the knowledge of your ancestors and are a key part of staying connected—physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. Contact a representative from the Youth Program or Patient Outreach for more information.

With summer approaching and the Tribe’s annual Restoration Gathering right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to celebrate who you are. Join in the Pow-Wow by dancing, singing, and wearing your regalia with pride. When you take part in songs and dances, you’re doing more than just having fun, you’re connecting with your culture, your family, and your community.

Tips to keep in mind:

  • Attend the youth activity and catch the nutrition demo with Dennis and the Youth Team (see the calendar on the Youth webpage and watch for more classes).
  • Ask questions about foods, wellness, or even about the words for certain foods in your Native language (from an elder or someone who speaks the language)
  • Talk to Elders or family members about the foods they grew up with and how they prepared them.
  • Go for a hike or walk and practice learning new words in your Native tongue for things you see. You can either get a list of these words from an elder or someone who speaks the language, or invite them along.
  • At Restoration, welcome guests and thank them for celebrating with you.
  • Dance in your category or if you’re new to dancing, jump into the inter-tribals

Movement is medicine. Language is strength. Culture is power.
