STRONG VOICES
In the month of April, we are focusing our theme on the drum. Growing up, most of us are taught to respect the drum, and it is important we do so. The drum is held in high regards in multiple Native communities. Some refer to it as “grandpa,” while others refer to it as its own respected entity. As we sing along with the drum, it is important to use a strong voice. It’s not only important to have a strong voice when singing but also in life.
Being able to participate in cultural activities like drumming can help give youth strong voices. Helping youth grow their voices for both drumming and speaking for themselves is important. They are our next leaders, and with strong voices they can publicly speak, advocate for themselves or for others, and make their voices heard. These are all important to youth as they grow. When youth can sing with strong voices but also advocate with the same voice, that builds confidence our youth needs.
Remember to also go to the PITU Youth webpage and check our monthly calendar to see when we will be visiting each area.
