As we begin the new year, setting goals can be a powerful way to make it a year of growth and success. Whether you’re focused on education, personal development, or community involvement, setting clear goals is a great way to stay motivated and on track. This month, the Native Youth Program is exploring S.M.A.R.T. goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
- Specific: Clear and well-defined goals. What exactly do you want to accomplish?
Example: “I will learn to speak more of my Native language.”
- Measurable: Find ways to measure your progress.
Example: “I will learn 5 new words in my language every month.”
- Achievable: Goals that are challenging but still possible. It’s important to stretch yourself, but also to stay realistic.
Example: “I will practice speaking my language for 15 minutes every day.”
- Relevant: Your goal should be something that aligns with your values or future aspirations.
Example: “I will learn my Native language to connect with my culture and community.”
- Time-bound: Set a deadline for when you want to achieve your goal. This will help you stay focused and motivated.
Example: “I will be able to hold a simple conversation in my language by the end of the year.”
Why Create SMART Goals?
- Focus: Setting SMART goals helps you stay focused and organized.
- Motivation: Achieving smaller milestones along the way keeps you motivated.
- Success: Clear, structured goals give you a higher chance of success.
Other SMART Goal Examples
- Physical Health: “I will practice pow-wow dance for 30 minutes every week to stay healthy and connected to my culture.”
- Community: “I will volunteer at least once a month to help support the Native Youth programs.”
- Personal Growth: “I will learn how to bead a traditional design by the summer to share with my family.”
