YOUTH VAPING (2024 SNAPSHOT)

No tobacco products, including e‑cigarettes, are safe—especially for children, teens, and young adults.

E‑cigarettes remain the most commonly used tobacco product among U.S. middle and high school students. About 1.63 million students (5.9%) currently use them—including 410,000 middle schoolers (3.5%) and 1.21 million high schoolers (7.8%).

Among students who vape:

• 87.6% use flavored products.
• 38.4% vape frequently (20+ days/month).
• 26.3% vape daily.
• Most use disposable devices, especially brands like Elf Bar, Breeze, and Mr. Fog.
• Over 1 in 3 students who use tobacco products use more than one type.
• Some e‑cigarettes are also used for substances like cannabis.

Youth vaping is influenced by factors like targeted advertising, easy access, flavored products, peer influence, and the effects of nicotine on the developing brain.
Use varies across groups, with higher rates reported among females and certain racial/ethnic groups, including American Indian/Alaska Native youth.

Encouragingly, many students want to quit:

• 63.9% say they want to stop.
• 67.4% tried quitting in the past year.
