DENTAL CROWNS
Teeth that are cracked, heavily worn down, or weakened by extensive decay may need extra support to stay strong. When a tooth needs more protection than a filling can provide, or after a tooth has had root canal treatment, dental crowns are the way to go! A crown helps reinforce the tooth and restore its natural shapes, allowing patients to live more comfortably while preserving the remaining healthy tooth structure.
A dental crown is a custom restoration that covers the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gumline. Crowns look like natural teeth and blend in with the surrounding teeth. To prepare for a crown, the dentist carefully reshapes the tooth, making room for the crown to sit comfortably, and then takes either impressions or digital scans so the crown can be made to fit perfectly.
Crowns can be made from a variety of materials. At FourPoints Health, almost all of our crowns are made using porcelain or ceramic because they are strong and closely resemble the color and appearance of natural teeth. Once the permanent crown is completed either in-office or in a lab, it is permanently bonded to the tooth and adjusted to ensure a comfortable bite. With proper care and regular dental visits, a crown can provide years of protection and function.
