WHAT IS NALOXONE?

Naloxone (also known by the brand name Narcan) is an emergency tool administered through a nasal spray that can quickly restore normal breathing to a person whose breathing has slowed or stopped as a result of overdosing on prescription opioid medications, heroin, or drugs that are contaminated with an opioid like fentanyl (e.g., cocaine, methamphetamine). It can be the difference between life and death.

Naloxone is not a controlled substance and cannot be abused. It can be given to people of all ages and is available without a prescription from participating pharmacies and FourPoints Health.

The following factors increase the risk of opioid overdose:

  • Anyone on prescription opioid medication
  • Anyone who uses illegal opioids like heroin or fentanyl
  • A history of overdose
  • Patients with sleep-disordered breathing (e.g., sleep apnea)
  • Patients taking benzodiazepines with opioids
  • Patients at risk of returning to a higher dose for which they have lost tolerance (e.g., patients undergoing tapering or recently released from prison or residential treatment)
  • Patients taking higher dosages of opioids (e.g., ≥50 MME/day)
  • A history of substance use disorder
