WHERE TO PUT YOUR FOCUS

From FourPoints Behavioral Health Manager Tyler Goddard:
When I learned to mountain bike, one lesson stood out: To avoid obstacles, you must focus on where you want to go—not on what you want to avoid. If I fixated on a rock in the trail, I usually hit it. When I focused instead on a clear path forward, I navigated the trail successfully.

The same principle applies to our thoughts. When we dwell on negativity, doubt, or fear, those feelings grow stronger. When we intentionally focus on what is positive and meaningful, we build resilience and confidence.

A simple way to shift your focus is through gratitude and self-reflection. Each day, identify at least three things you are grateful for—such as your health, a safe home, supportive relationships, or a small moment of beauty. Write them down and take a moment to notice how they positively affect your outlook.

You can also strengthen self-esteem by acknowledging your accomplishments. Each day, list three things you achieved or contributed to, no matter how small. Consider the effort, persistence, or kindness that made them possible, and take a moment to recognize your own growth. Ask yourself: “Did I work hard? Did I keep trying? Did I never give up?”

By focusing on where you want to go, you can move forward with purpose and avoid the obstacles of negativity and self-doubt.
