MORE THAN A MEAL

The Importance of Family Meals and Quality Time as School Starts

Between work, school, appointments, sports, and other responsibilities, finding time for the entire family to sit together can be difficult. However, sharing meals and spending quality time together can help strengthen relationships, improve communication, and create a greater sense of belonging within the home.

Family meals do not need to be expensive or elaborate. What matters most is creating an opportunity for family members to slow down, connect, and talk with one another. Sitting together allows parents and caregivers to ask children about their day, celebrate their accomplishments, and learn about any problems or concerns they may be experiencing. These conversations can help children feel heard, valued, and supported.

Mealtime is also an opportunity to pass down family traditions and cultural knowledge. Families can prepare traditional foods, share family stories, speak or practice Paiute words, and invite elders or extended family members to participate. These moments help children understand who they are, where they come from, and the importance of maintaining strong connections with their family and community.

Quality time can take many forms beyond sharing a meal. Families can take a walk, play a game, read together, cook, attend a community event, or complete a household project as a team. Even 15 to 30 minutes of focused time can make a difference. When possible, put away phones and other distractions so everyone can be present and involved.

Here are a few simple ways to make family time part of your routine:

  • Choose one or two evenings each week for a family meal.
  • Let children help select or prepare the food.
  • Ask each person to share something good about their day.
  • Use mealtime as a judgment-free space where everyone can speak.
  • Include grandparents, elders, and extended family whenever possible.
  • Create simple traditions that your family can look forward to.

Strong families are built through small, consistent moments of connection. A shared meal, a meaningful conversation, or time spent laughing together can become a memory that children carry with them throughout their lives. Taking time to reconnect reminds every family member that they are loved, supported, and an important part of the family. For a copy of a free cookbook, contact Alexis Wall at (435)586-1112.
