Watermelon – Maw’dunts (Click here for the pronunciation).

In celebration of National Watermelon Day on Aug. 3, the word of the month is “watermelon.” This food was very important to the Paiutes. As opposed to the red watermelon, the variety most commonly grown by the Paiutes was the yellow variety, which is actually the original form of watermelon before it was later bred for higher lycopene content, resulting in the red variety.
