Sunflower – Kawngoomp (Click here for the pronunciation).

The arrival of the bright yellow sunflowers in our ancestral landscape is a welcoming to the fall season. Traditionally, the seeds were dried roasted, ground, and boiled into a mush. Dried seeds were also stored for winter months to add into soups and stews or mixed with dried meat and animal fat to create pemmican. Flower petals can be used as a natural dye.
