Three-leaf sumac – Su’uv (Click here for the pronunciation)

Young sumac branches were highly prized by basketmakers for making cradleboard, winnowing trays, and other kinds of baskets. Boiling the stems and leaves with pinyon pitch and yellow ochre makes an exceptional black dye for basketry, buckskins, feathers and wool, and the red fruits were eaten fresh or dried and ground for a beverage.
